The parrot’s ear

The parrot's ear

The parrot’s ear -The ears of the birds are not easily identifiable due to the lack of an external flag. Many owners are surprised to learn that their parrot has ears.

In parrots, the orifice of the ear is covered with feathers of modified blankets. The clinician can update the ear canal by gently blowing on the side of the bird’s head. The ear is caudal and ventral to the lateral canthus of the eye.

Because of the small size of the ear canal, it is impossible to perform an otoscopic examination in the vast majority of parrots. Nevertheless, because of its anatomic proximity to the eye, the ear can be affected by any lesion in the latter. On examination, the duct must be clean, dry, and without any sign of apparent inflammation (mainly edema or erythema).

Where are the parrot ears? Manon is 10 years old. They are behind the eyes, hidden under the feathers. The ears of birds have no visible flag like those of mammals.

The clinician may look for signs of otitis externa by observing the plumage surrounding the ear orifice (glued or soiled feathers).

Otitis is the most common affections of the auditory system, tumors, polyps, or tympanic protrusions being rather rare conditions in parrots.

Unlike humans, Parrots do not have ears on either side of the head. A characteristic that does not make them deaf, however. Yes, birds(like all vertebrate animals) have an inner ear. An important element has two functions:

  • allow keeping the balance
  • contain the organ of hearing

As the result, it is enough to make them sing and communicate together.

Animals with keen hearing

Don’t be fooled by all the feathers that cover their heads. Birds have an auditory canal (the famous hole in the ears) hidden by their own. Their keen hearing is very useful for hearing predators approaching but also for controlling their voice and emitting a melodious song. Note, however, that some raptors (hawks, vultures, and eagles) have ear flags (ears like humans). If you come across an Abyssinian owl, you will find that it has small, furry ears.

Do birds hear like humans?

Almost. They hear the bass-less well than humans. However, their high sensitivity to high-pitched sounds allows them to pick up some slight ultrasound (sounds at very low frequencies audible by certain mammals such as dogs, bats, dolphins ), unlike humans.
