Show Your Parrot Your Love

Show Your Parrot Your Love: Brightly colored, affectionate, and easygoing, parrots are wonderful pets for bird lovers of all ages. Whether you are a new “parent” owner of a parrot or you have had it for a few years, here are 6 simple ways to show your parrot or parakeet how much you care about him and that you love him!

Don’t rush him: let him take the first step

As is the case with many other animals, parrots that are not used to their environment, a new routine, strange noises or a new owner can be capricious and nervous. Whether your parrot is new to you or not, before you try to intensify your attachment “ritual”, let it come to you. Make yourself available to it by sitting nearby when it is outside its habitat, but do not approach it right away. Let them get used to your presence first.

Who knows? Maybe after a while, he’ll feel comfortable and confident enough to approach you on his own.

Share a meal with your parrot

In the wild, parrots often share meals. When you do the same with your pet parrot, you show him that you are part of his tribe or “siblings”. Make sure that what you feed your pet is safe for them and low in salt and seasonings. Above all, avoid:

  • chocolate;
  • junk food;
  • large quantities of dairy products such as hard cheeses and yogurt;
  • lawyers;
  • processed meats;
  • onions;
  • sprouted beans;
  • fruit stones and apple seeds;
  • and rhubarb.

Speak and sing softly for them

Parrots communicate in two ways: through their voice and through their body language.

You can communicate using the methods they prefer by talking softly to them, playing music, and singing softly for them.

If they like music, try dancing

As we mentioned in point 3, parrots communicate through body language and sounds.

So how do you combine these communication methods?

Put on something catchy with a good rhythm, and you and your parrot can dance together.

If that sounds ridiculous, just Google “parrot dance.” If your new parrot is a cockatoo, dancing should surely seduce them because they have a natural love for dancing!

Give them treats

Do you know how you feel when someone offers you a hot and homemade cookie or cake?

This is exactly how parrots feel when they are given treats.

There are a ton of delicious treats for parrots and macaws! You will find them in specialized shops for birds.

Hold and caress them

Please note that new owners of parrots will have to get used to this form of affection. Once your parrot feels comfortable with you and is happy to be in your presence, start by lightly touching his beak. If it goes well, try gently stroking the sides of his head. Then you may be able to stroke the back of his head and neck. We have found that many parrots like to be caressed on their ears… if you can find them!

Don’t rush things and be patient with yourself and your parrot or parakeet.
