Ethology

Ethology is the scientific discipline of the study of the behavior of animal species ( including humans ) in their significant environment. Its purpose is to describe and understand behavior. The ultimate object of avian ethology ( psittacidae ) is to list all the behaviors possessed by the parrot.

Ethology is the observation of animal behavior in relation to its environment.

The environment includes its physical environment, but also the interior environment, social interactions with its own species or other species, and the perception of its environment. We believe that behaviors depend on genes or on how evolution has prepared the animal to function in a particular environment.

The study and observation of behavior arouses the interest of physiologists and psychologists. These should reject anecdotes for systematic observation. At the end of the 19th century, several researchers, such as Loeb, Pavlov and Watson, attempted to explain behavior by conditioning a response to stimulation. A few decades later, ethology became the comparative biological study of behavior following the work of Konrad Lorenz ( father of classical ethology). Zoologist, physician, philosopher and ecologist, he was one of the last naturalists. He liked to live in contact with animals and studied their behavior without being perverted by certain metaphysical models such as anthropomorphism. A fervent supporter of Charles Darwin, he brings to light the notion of the innate. Nowadays, research in ethology is a place of convergence.

The aim of ethology is therefore to describe and understand the behaviors that characterize the animal.

A methodical approach

Ethology is based on planned and repeated observations. The initial objective is to list all the behaviors that a species has. By detailing a category of behaviors or ethogram of a behavior, we work on the basis of understanding the various mechanisms. For only a few years now, the usefulness of these observations has been noticed.

In addition, we are interested in the adaptive capacity of the animal in the context of the evolution of the species. Moreover, ethology is a field halfway between learning and sociobiology or sociology. Over time, ethology has evolved. Objectivism will become, like others, a discipline that will rely on our knowledge to explain the behavior of our pets.

Human beings have a duty to understand the behavior of animal species.
This knowledge is essential to prevent the animals he takes as companions from suffering unnecessarily, whether for emotional, aesthetic, intellectual satisfaction or simply for recreational or food purposes.
